5 Top Tips for Utilising Your Garage Space

5 Top Tips for Utilising Your Garage Space

The holidays and weekends are the perfect time for home DIY, and if it’s the school holidays it’s a great way to keep the children busy by roping them into helping you-you can always thank them later with sweets and milkshakes if they’re productive!

Single garages and double garages were designed for the storage of vehicles, yet more often than not, garages don’t get used for keeping cars, motorbikes and motorhomes in.

Many garages are used as the home storage facility. If this is the case for you, and you want to declutter and fully utilise your garage space for storage, here are some top tips to help you achieve this:

Garage Storage Ideas

  • Bicycle storage ideas - fix bikes to the wall using a bike wall mount or wall rack. Or keep all bikes together in one place neatly, such as in a corner.
  • Invest in good, sturdy racking to store surplus items such as tools and adhesives.
  • Use large plastic crates to store smaller items such as garden pesticides, which can be labelled up accordingly so items can be found easily by family members.
  • Add overhead storage if you can, this is ideal for items such as kayaks or items which you don’t use all of the time.
  • Put up shelving - it is just as good in the garage as it is in your home. Perfect for storing regular go-to items such as pet food and washing powder.

Practical Garage Doors for Maximum Space

Bespoke garage doors such as side hinged garage doors, steel up and over garage doors and sectional doors can provide great flexibility when it comes to your garage space.

Sectional garage doors are one of our most popular garage doors for people who want to totally maximise the space in their garage. They are designed to open and close vertically, meaning not only can you park your vehicle right up to the front of the garage door, but you can store things behind it, providing that you’re not driving your vehicle inside the garage.

Side hinged garage doors can be made with a centre split or off centre split, meaning only a small section of the door needs to be opened at one time. This allows you to simply pop in and out of the garage quickly, without the need to fully open the garage door and present its content to potential prying eyes.

Up and over garage doors are one of the most popular garage door types in the UK. They can be made-to-measure allowing this type of door to be installed to almost any garage. What’s more, you can choose from a retractable up and over door which retracts the door fully into the garage when opened. Alternatively, a canopy up and over garage door acts as a canopy (the clues in the name right?) once opened, remaining outside the garage when opened, which may prove very practical if you need some outdoor space with a cover when its raining.

We hope these tips have given you some inspiration when it comes to utilising your garage space. Take a look at our Help & Guidance page for more informative information about garages and garage doors.
